In May 2014, Teignbridge District Council and the police withdrew funding for the maintenance, support and management of the town’s CCTV infrastructure.
Fearing the dismantling of this award-winning initiative and recognising the importance of CCTV to the safety and security of the business and residential communities, Newton Abbot Town Council partnered with the then Newton Abbot and District Chamber of Trade and Commerce, along with local department store Austins, to deliver the service by way of a trust.
Newton Abbot Security Trust (NAST) security staff are not employed by Newton Abbot Town Council or the Chamber of Trade. Instead, NAST is funded by an annual contribution of £16,000 from Newton Abbot Town Council and by subscriptions from businesses to the radio link scheme, which is also part of NAST.
Administration of the Trust and its finances is carried out by Austins personnel. Additional income is derived from security services provided by NAST to Market Walk Shopping Centre and other local towns.
