Newton Abbot Mayor welcomes building society’s commitment to town

NEWTON Abbot Mayor, Cllr Colin Parker, has welcomed the news that the Nationwide Building Society is committed to staying in town until at least 2030.

Cllr Parker was present at the Queen Street branch on Tuesday January 20 to preside over a ribbon-cutting ceremony following a makeover of the property.

He told those present that, at a time when banks and other institutions were shrinking their presence on the nations’ high streets, the event was about much more than a fresh lick of paint.

‘As Mayor, I often get to see the changing face of our town but today is particularly special because it represents something we value deeply in Newton Abbot, commitment,’ he said.

‘We all know that the heart of a community is its high street. In an era where we increasingly see services moving online and branches closing their doors, seeing this beautifully refurbished Nationwide branch is a breath of fresh air.

‘But this isn't just about a new coat of paint or a modern layout. The true celebration today is Nationwide’s Branch Promise, their public commitment to remain right here in Newton Abbot until at least 2030.

‘For our residents, especially those who value face-to-face support, our local business owners, and those who simply prefer the human touch, this commitment provides peace of mind. It ensures that Newton Abbot remains a vibrant place to shop, work, and do business.

‘I want to thank the local team for their hard work during this refurbishment. You are more than just a building society, you are part of the fabric of our town centre.

‘Here’s to many more years of service to the people of Newton Abbot.’
