Message from the Mayor of Newton Abbot, Councillor Colin Parker

As Mayor I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas. It is a true privilege to represent the town of Newton Abbot especially at this time of year at the various events that I attend and to meet and talk with so many familiar and friendly people and repeatedly be reminded of the incredible spirit that makes Newton Abbot such a special place to call home.

During this season we should all be reminded of the true meaning of Christmas and as we listen to the timeless carols at many concerts and reflect on the Nativity story, we bring our thoughts back to the true heart of Christmas when we share messages of hope, peace, and unconditional love. This is a time to pause, to be grateful for our blessings, and to remember the importance of compassion towards others. This profound message encourages us not just to celebrate, but to embody these values in our daily lives.

We must reflect on a strong community spirit and how wonderfully our town embodies this! The spirit of Christmas in Newton Abbot isn't just found in the twinkling lights on Queen Street, Courtenay Street and at the Clock Tower or in the festive markets and events, it's found in every one of you.

It’s in the volunteers who dedicate their time, the neighbours who check on one another, the local businesses that support our events, and the kindness shown across all our diverse groups. This past year, I have seen our community spirit shine very brightly, proving that when we work together, we can overcome any challenge.

In the spirit of giving and support, I want to take a moment to shine a light on my chosen charity for the year, the Citizens Advice.

This vital organisation offers essential support and confidential guidance to so many in our community during their most challenging times; whether it's managing debt, understanding housing issues, or navigating complex benefits. They are a lifeline, a source of stability, and an embodiment of practical compassion. As we celebrate, I ask you to remember them and consider supporting the tireless work they do to ensure no one in Newton Abbot has to face difficult times alone. I echo this in respect of the many other charities and good causes active in our town.

As I end this message I would just like entrust to you all that the hope of Christmas fills your homes and may the joy of this season inspire a renewed sense of community in the year ahead.

On behalf of the Mayoress, my family and all the members of Newton Abbot Town Council, I wish every one of you a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year.

Thank you.

Councillor Colin Parker
