Free summer activities for all ages at Newton Abbot Museum

FREE activities at Newton Abbot Museum this summer include the Young Curators’ Club Summer Holiday Club which meets every Tuesday between August 5 – 29.

The 10.30am – 12.30pm sessions are for 8 to16-year-olds and allow youngsters to try their hands at skills used by museum professionals such as conservation techniques and choosing the best objects to display.

Also free are the Thursday Summer Craft sessions for people of all ages.

Two sessions are available, the first running 10am – 11am and the second running 11.30am – 12.30pm. The workshops offer opportunities to create objects such as train-shaped pen holders, paper chain trains, badges and other accessories.

One session will even encourage people to invent their own train-based board games.

A paid-for event is the August 4 Back Along The Tracks creative writing workshop for adults which takes 200 years of rail travel as its theme.

Income from the 1pm – 4pm event will help fund other museum activities.

On August 8 there is a 3D buildings workshop taking place, focusing on Newton Abbot Train Station. Two sessions are being run, one at 10:30am – 12pm and the second at 1:30pm – 3pm.

Families can work together to create a 3D model of the train station using pen, chalk, charcoal and pencil To be later featured in the museum in spring 2026.

The summer activities programme will run alongside the museum’s regular offerings and all sessions require pre-booking. Check out our website for details.

‘We’re thrilled with our summer events programme, most of which is free, and look forward to welcoming plenty of new and familiar faces’ said Curator Dr Charlotte Dixon.
