Classic cars and live music greet shoppers in Newton Abbot

THE cars of yesteryear rubbed bumpers with shoppers in Newton Abbot on Saturday [sep13] when members of Teignbridge Classics gathered to display their treasures for all to see.

Courtenay Street, Wolborough Street and Bank Street provided venues for the show, the second of its kind to take place in the town centre this year.

Admiring glances and phrases such as ‘I learned to drive in one of those’ were offered up by the crowds, many of whom also enjoyed the street market and live music.

Mayor Cllr Colin Parker and Mayoress Jean Parker were on hand to give the event its official civic stamp of approval, and grateful to the club for helping to keep the town vibrant.

‘We’re absolutely delighted it’s here, and for the second time this year thanks to Jamie Theobold and members of Teignbridge Classics,’ said Cllr Parker.

‘This is the third year that the club has partnered with Newton Abbot Town Council and long may that continue.

‘Events like this are really valuable as they bring people into town. The last one in June resulted in tremendous numbers and traders did very well, asking when the next would be.

‘But that’s why the Town Council has a full events programme, we want to put Newton Abbot on the map, keep it an attractive destination for shoppers and somewhere the community can be proud of.’

Club Chairman Jamie said the event was very popular with his members and he was pleased with the turnout, despite September’s unpredictable weather.

‘There are always some people who don’t like taking their classics out when it’s raining but it’s been very well supported, so we’re really happy,’ he said.

‘There’s no competition when we show here, it’s just about choosing the car we’d most like to take home.

‘Continuing to get support from the Town Council is brilliant for us and its good for the community.’
