Newton Abbot town centre was bursting with excitement on Wednesday 13th December thanks to the lantern parade in the town.  Approx. 200 pupils from Bearnes, Wolborough, All Saints, Decoy, Bradley Barton, Haytor View, Highweek & St Joseph’s Primary Schools took pride in parading their colourful Christmas lanterns through the streets of Newton Abbot towards the Clock Tower.  The theme this year was ‘Into the Deep’ and the lanterns varied from fish and dolphins to seahorses and whales, it truly was a ‘sea’ of colour.  A big thank you to local artist Tony Gee and other members of the Creation Myth Puppets who were able to make this fantastic event possible once again, working in partnership with Newton Abbot Town Council.

The town was a hive of activity as shoppers visited the popular Christmas street fayre with live entertainment throughout the night and also the magical Santa’s Grotto run all night at St Leonards Clock Tower.

Natalie Hicks Events Co-ordinator for the Town Council said: ‘Once again the lantern parade did not disappoint, Newton Abbot was bursting at the seams with people enjoying the event as well as the street fayre in
town.  The lantern parade was made up of children from all 8 of the Newton Abbot primary schools and also members of the public who had attended the lantern parade workshops and made their own lanterns.’

The weather was wet but it did not dampen anyone’s spirits.  The parade began at Bearnes Primary School and walked through the town centre and ended at the Clock Tower with a story being told looking at the riches and
amazing creatures the sea accommodates, the end saw all the lanterns and children dancing to ‘I’ve Got a Feeling’ by Justin Timberlake.

Even though it was a wet evening it didn’t stop the children or members of public coming out and supporting the event.  We had a short dry window for the story at the end, however the wet weather tied in very nicely with the theme.

‘Thank you to everyone that helped and to the people of Newton Abbot for supporting this community event, we hope to see you in the town next Wednesday evening for the final late night shopping event to include the
Mayors Carol Service, street fayre and Santa’s Grotto.’
