Services

Allotments – The Council has 6 allotment fields in the town, 5 of which are administered by the Newton Abbot and District Allotments Association. If you are interested in applying for an allotment plot, please click here for the Allotment Association. Please note – there is currently a waiting list in operation.

Footpaths – Footpaths in and around the town are maintained by the Town Council under an agreement with Devon County Council. If you have an issue with a footpath please contact the Council – click here. If you would like to contact the County Council regarding a footpath matter please click here

Town Assets – the Council is responsible for the Town Quay off Brunel Road; St Leonard’s Clock Tower, Wolborough Street; the War Memorial, Queen Street; Victoria Gardens, Victoria Place and various bus shelters and street furniture around the town.

Newton in Bloom – the Council organises and funds seasonal planting around the town centre in the form of formal beds, hanging baskets and planters. Businesses are also offered the opportunity to sponsor these in certain locations. The Council also organises the Newton in Bloom Schools Painting Competition.

Grants to Local Organisations – the Council has a small budget which allows it to make financial contributions to local projects on an annual basis. Applications have to be submitted to the Council by 30th September each year as the Grants Sub-Committee only meets once a year in October. Bus Shelters – the Council provides and maintains numerous bus shelters throughout the town. Town centre shelters carry advertising through an agreement with advertising company Clear Channel Adshel. Street Cafe Guidance – Devon County Council and Newton Abbot Town Council support the principle of establishing street cafes to improve the vitality of streets within the district’s towns.  Street cafes can make a positive contribution to the street scene and to the vitality of shopping and tourist area, bringing life, colour and interest into the street.  For more information please CLICK HERE

Shop Improvement Grant Scheme – Newton Abbot Town Council has allocated funds to assist with improvements to frontages/access/interiors of shop premises in Newton Abbot in an attempt to make a real improvement to the look of the local shopping area.  The scheme is open to all freeholders and lease-holders with at least five years remaining of their lease and tenants of premises with commercial or community service shop frontages facing the street within the town of Newton Abbot.  This will include shopping parades e.g. as in Buckland.  A grant is available to cover up to 50% of the total expenditure on the proposed project.  This means that the owners/tenants will still need to finance the remaining 50%.  

Closing date for applications is 31st March annually for work ranging from entirely new shop fronts and large scale replacement and repair work, to painting, signage, displays or lighting.

Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) Publication Scheme – The Council is required by the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) to adopt a Publication Scheme. The purpose of the scheme is to be a means by which local councils can make a significant amount of information available routinely, without waiting for someone to specifically request it.  Newton Abbot Town Council has adopted the Model Publication Scheme. This scheme includes some core information and some optional information.  The information contained in each class will be available in a variety of formats, namely a hard copy on request from the Town Clerk, by inspection at the Council offices or some information may be available on the Council’s website. Reasonable charges may apply for the provision of copies of the documents/information listed in each of the classes. Photocopying charges are 7p per A4 page black and white and 17p per page colour.  The Full Scheme can be viewed by clicking HERE

The opening times are 9.00 a.m. to 5.15 p.m. 7 days a week.
