Christmas Lights Switch On - Saturday 26th November 2016
Newton Abbot Town Council organised a day of music and entertainment for all the family, to celebrate the switching on of the towns Christmas lights. During the day Coombeshead College students performed live music to the members of public and free face painting and balloon modelling was on offer to the public. Breeze radio station were also in town with their ‘Safe Cracker’ event, offering the members of the public a chance to win a car.
The excitement built as darkness approached, which signalled the start of the annual Father Christmas Parade. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Newton Abbot, the Town and Borough Criers and their escorts, the Kingsteignton Town Crier, Councillors, Carnival Queen and attendants, Carnival Fair maidens and musical organ. Black Bess Morris dancers and Heather & Gorse clog dancers entertained the crowds at the Clock Tower whilst the parade was on route. Once the lights had been switched on the evening ended with a fantastic musical firework finale to Star Wars music. The crowd were bigger than ever and it was a fantastic evening enjoyed by all.
The Town Council are grateful to Newton Abbot Rotary Club, the Carnival Committee, Town Councillors and volunteers who put so much time, effort and enthusiasm into making this event such a lovely one for families each year. We are also extremely grateful to businesses, which contribute so generously to the Christmas lights fund, as it is with their support that Newton Abbot Town Council is able to put on such a splendid show of festive lights.
