Christmas 2008

NEWTON ABBOT CHRISTMAS 2008

The first late night shopping evening in December saw the annual Victorian Evening take Fireworks in Newton Abbot 2008place in Market Square.  There were 35 charity stalls in the Square as well as Punch and Judy shows, a Victorian Policeman and a guy on a Penny Farthing.  Father Christmas was also in his grotto from 6 pm – 8 pm.  The night was a resounding success with the Mayor's charity making just over £350 from collections and the selling of raffle tickets.  Positive feedback was also received by stallholders, present figures show that stalls raised in total over £2,000 from 6-8 pm.  Best dressed stall was awarded to Barnardo’s Children’s Centre.

A good night was had by all on Wednesday 17th December when Newton Abbot held their annual Mayor’s Carol Service, this year in front of the Clock Tower.  Carols were played by the Salvation Army Band and a number of readings were read by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Newton Abbot as well as the Town Clerk.  A large turnout gathered by the Tower for 7 pm with carols being sung until 7.30 pm.  To round off the evening Newton Abbot hosted their first firework show, with fireworks being fired from Wolborough Hill.
