The Newton Shredders – Young People win prestigious award

The Newton Shredders have been awarded the title of Young Citizens of the Year from Crimestoppers. The group have been working hard together over the past 18months to try and raise awareness, campaign and promote the need for a skate/bmx park in Bakers Park. They have delivered over 500 consultation letters and carried out surveys with the local police amongst a few of their many tasks.

The Shredders were put forward for the award by local PCSO Charlotte Perkin who they have been working with for the past 18months. She says ‘The group’s dedication and enthusiasm to get a facility in the area was the main reason I nominated them. They have worked so hard, it all started due to complaints of them carrying out their hobby in the local area where they live, they wanted to turn that around and find somewhere for them to use which wouldn’t cause annoyance to residents. A big well done to the group’
They have also been working with Jane Ballantyne from the Community Interest Company who has also played a big part in their achievements so far... ‘..This is a fantastic achievement and they deserve this award for their commitment to the project, young people and the community’.
The group were whittled down to the final four and due to their hard work and efforts were awarded Young Citizens of the Year on the 24th November at an award ceremony held by Devon and Cornwall Community Watch Association (DaCCWA) in Lewdown, nr Okehampton. The groups chair person Stephen Moore and deputy chair Cameron Whitford accepted the award on behalf of the group and were overwhelmed to receive it.
Stephen and Cameron have said ‘.We are honoured and feel humbled by this experience, to be honest we feel overwhelmed with pride.
They would also like to thank everyone for their support and hope to get continued support.
