Town Hall and Museum say Bye Bye Baby to a rocking 2,000 kg of CO2 thanks to the Newton’s Cradle project ! Newton’s Cradle, a project between Transition Newton Abbot and the Town Hall and Museum, has highlighted energy savings which equate to £850 saving per year at their current electricity prices. Fuad Al-Tawil of the Transition Newton Abbot (TNA) group reported to us “we are extremely pleased with the initial results of the energy saving measures” and added that “this initial carbon saving is equivalent to the emissions from the electricity used by a typical UK household”. Transition Newton Abbot (TNA) has worked in partnership with Phil Rowe, Newton Abbot’s Town Clerk, managing the energy assessment and implementation within the challenging constraints of a listed building. The project was aptly named “Newton’s Cradle” by the TNA Energy Group whose aims were to reduce the emissions (Carbon Footprint) without sacrificing comfort. Staff at the Town Hall and Museum have been involved in the ongoing process so that everyone is aware and can take responsibility for energy used in their workplace. Phil Rowe said, “I was amazed by the findings of the TNA survey and of course very impressed by the significant savings”. Phil is using electricity monitoring equipment available from the town’s library or as part of a home energy assessment pack provided by TNA. The measures undertaken include the particular challenge of draught -proofing the windows in this listed building, Phil Rowe commented that ,” the Ventrolla System has proved to be excellent, then there was the loft insulation; door draught- proofing; radiator reflective panels; and last but by no means least, the Bell LED bulbs supplied by Comet Lighting of Newton Abbot, especially for the large amount needed for the Museum”. The project received support from a number of suppliers, whose products, materials and workmanship can be viewed by the public. TNA extends special thanks to Cllr. Gordon Hook of Devon County Council whose generous support funded this unique pilot energy saving project. Gordon Hook commented, "Transition Newton and the Town Council are to be congratulated on this outstanding piece of work. If public awareness about our energy use is raised, then it will be money well spent". He went on to emphasise, "I would love to see every business in Newton Abbot taking active measures to achieve their own independent power supplies, it makes environmental and economic sense. We all need to take urgent action in order to face the challenge of energy supplies in the future. There has never been a better time to invest in energy conservation and renewable energy!" Newton Abbot residents should soon be treated to a series of sculptures representing the various Renewable Energy sources. The sculptures are aimed at raising awareness of our energy consumption. The beautiful structures will be mounted at key points in Newton Abbot and topped off with tiny lights powered by, what else but solar power, of course! The TNA Energy Group is happy to share its expertise and experience with other interested parties. Fuad Al-Tawil said , “it is our hope that we can encourage other commercial property owners and households to benefit from assessing their energy usage.
