NEWTON ABBOT TOWN COUNCIL AGREES TO LEASE TO SECURE FUTURE OF LEATNewton Abbot Town Council has agreed at a recent Council meeting to enter into a lease of two areas of the Bradley Lane Leat in Newton Abbot from Devon County Council. The County Council has undertaken to substantially refurbish two open areas of the town’s ancient leat following which the Town Council will lease the areas for a period of 21 years and take responsibility for their future maintenance. The Town Council together with residents of Bradley Lane have on numerous occasions put together work groups to clear refuse, vegetation and debris from the Leat as the lack of litter bins in the area and lack of maintenance had caused the water in the Leat to stop flowing causing an unsightly environment. The Town Council has canvassed the County Council for some time to take action in this area as the Town Council and local residents are keen for the area to become a feature of the Town. One area of the Leat itself needs substantial engineering works as its lining is crumbling. The County Council has agreed to undertake a full refurbishment of both areas and install quality railings to make the areas safe and improve the environment for residents. The Town Council for its part will take over future maintenance of the area. Town Mayor, Councillor David Corney-Walker, commented that “This is a real opportunity for another area of the Town to be improved and a feature made of our ancient heritage. The Council has for some time been attempting to effect improvements in this area for the benefit of residents and users alike. This agreement with the County Council is another great example of collaborative working for the benefit of the Town.” -ENDS-
