MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL MEETING OF THE NEWTON IN BLOOM SUB-COMMITTEE HELD ON WEDNESDAY 16th JUNE 2010 AT 6.30 PM AT THE TOWN HALL, GREAT WESTERN HOUSE, 9 DEVON SQUARE, NEWTON ABBOTPRESENT: Councillors Mrs D Watts (Chairman) Presiding Councillors Mrs C Bunday CO-OPTED MEMBERS: Mr J Collins – Horticulturist Apologies for absence were submitted on behalf of Councillor Mrs A Fry and Councillor H Cole and Hannah Reid. N6. INTERESTS None declared.
Members noted the Newton in Bloom Residents Competition 2010 and the Newton in Bloom Non Residents Competition 2010 (previously circulated) The Sub-Committee discussed the judging arrangements and it was decided that if anyone wanted to change categories then they must discuss amongst themselves and report back any changes to the Chairman. N8. REGIONAL COMPETITION – JUDGING ROUTE Members discussed the Regional Competition judging route. The proposed route was presented to the Sub- Committee, the main features of the route were: Newton Abbot Town Hall; The Avenue / War Memorial; Queen Street; Recycling Centre; Decoy Allotments; Surestart Allotments site; Newton Abbot Cemetery; Bakers Park; Vicary’s Field; Bradley Leat; Bradley Barton Primary School; Town Centre / market; Courtenay Park. Members discussed the proposed route and decided prior to the judging day that members would work through the route and clean up where necessary, and also on the morning of the actual judging. The Sub-Committee discussed how there would be a member of the Sub-Committee at every location on the judging route so they can ensure the area was clean and tidy and also engage with the Regional judges. The Chairman thanked the members of the Sub-Committee for all their assistance for Newton in Bloom this year, and especially to the Events Co-ordinator for her work on the Newton in Bloom portfolio. N9. UPDATES Lea Park updated the Sub-Committee and explained the number baskets not yet allocated. It was decided that the Chairman and Events Co-ordinator would visit Lea Park to view the remaining baskets and to decide on their location. The Chairman updated the Sub-Committee on the progress of the Schools Painting Competition and informed members that some paintings had been received and more were expected to arrive soon. N10.
