The Town

Newton Abbot, Devon is located in the South West of England within Teignbridge District Council's region.

Newton Abbot grew substantially on the introduction of the railway in the 19th century. The Town still enjoys a strategic position on the main railway line to London, Penzance and The North and excellent trunk road and motorway connections, situated off the A380 Exeter to Torquay Road. Newton Abbot is often known as the Gateway to Moor and Sea because of its closeness to Dartmoor National Park and the coastal resorts of Torquay and Teignmouth.

The Town has much to be proud of; St Leonards Tower; Decoy Country Park and numerous other town parks; Forde House; Bradley Manor; a Town Quay; six allotment areas; excellent primary and secondary schools; Museum and Railway museum; a leisure centre; a new hospital under construction; the Racecourse to name but a few.

There are currently nearly 19,000 persons on the electoral roll with 5 Wards within the town and 18 Town Councillors elected to represent residents. Each May, Town Councillors elect one of their members to be Mayor for the next 12 months to represent the town at events both at home and abroad.

The Town is proud of the recently opened redeveloped Market area and the Bank Street/Wolborough Street improvements and extended pedestrianised areas which has greatly enhanced Newton Abbot's unique atmosphere as a Regional Shopping Centre.
