Britain in Bloom

Newton in Bloom

Newton Abbot War Memorial surrounded by flowersThe Town Council's Britain in Bloom committee was formed back in the 1980's, and is currently made up of:

  • Councillors
  • Residents
  • Representatives from the Allotments Association, Teignbridge District Council and Devon County Council

Its original brief was the running of our local competition for residents' private gardens and displays put up by traders. Enhancement of the town centre with displays and consequent entry into the Regional Southwest in Bloom competition followed later.

Regional Competition- Towns of 19,000 to 34,999 population.

Plant holder on the streetThat town centre enhancement is still a principal part of our efforts and is what in general, people remember and imagine the competition to be all about. In fact 50% of marks are given for floral displays and 25% for activities improving environmental responsibilty.

That leaves 25% of the marks which are shared between:

  • Creating 'Sustainable Development' in the form of nature conservation
  • Waste minimisation and recycling
  • 'Environmental Quality' in the form of street/pavement tidiness and general presentation of street furniture etc
  • 'Public Awareness' which is basically getting the message across that everyone has a part to play

Community involvement cuts across all these issues and is the essential ingredient in capitalising on potential marks. If you or a local group are or would like to suggest an environmental project, please let us know so we can record your progress and give support to your efforts if required.
